LONDON — The top Brexit negotiators in the U.K. and EU will talk again this afternoon amid an impasse that threatens to blow up trade talks, officials on both sides said.
David Frost and Michel Barnier are preparing to hold a phone conversation which could take place around 2 p.m. U.K. time.
It comes after a chat on Monday failed to secure the formal resumption of formal talks, though equally didn’t end negotiations altogether.
Britain refused to negotiate after the European Council argued it needed to climb down from its red lines in negotiations. Frost said Brussels wanted concessions without being willing to make compromises itself.
The U.K. also wants to move to discussions on legal texts in all areas. Brussels at first appeared to refuse that demand, but Barnier agreed to do so following the talk on Monday.
However, British officials said that without a signal from the EU that it is also ready to make concessions, formal talks can’t resume.
