Ottawa Plans to Scrap EV Sales Mandate: Government Sources

Ottawa is planning to end the electric vehicle sales mandate as part of a new automotive strategy, according to multiple media reports based on government sources.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to make the announcement Feb. 5 as part of a national strategy for Canada’s automotive sector, replacing the current electric vehicle (EV) sales mandate with new regulations based on emissions and new rebates to encourage Canadians to buy EVs.
Carney’s announcement will also reportedly include the introduction of a $1.5 billion fund focused on developing EV infrastructure.
Ottawa’s EV sales mandate went into effect in December 2023 and required that 20 percent of new light-duty vehicle sales be from zero-emission EVs by this year, 60 percent by 2030, and 100 percent by 2035….
