Netherlands receives first sum from EU Covid-19 fund

Initial €1.3 billion from Recovery and Resilience Facility will support quantum research and digitalisation

The Netherlands has received its first transfer from the EU’s €648 billion Covid-19 recovery fund, part of which will be used for research.

An initial €1.3bn in grants was transferred from the Recovery and Resilience Facility on 24 September, with the Netherlands set to receive a total of €5.4bn in grants overall.

The RRF was established in 2021 as part of the wider Next Generation EU scheme to provide EU member states with financial support to mitigate the economic and social impact of Covid-19. The funding is intended to support a range of reforms and investments agreed with the European Commission and is doled out based on the achievement of agreed targets.

The first Dutch tranche will support investments in areas including quantum research and digital equipment for students, the Commission said. Certain portions of every country’s investments must be allocated to tackling climate change and achieving digitalisation.

The Netherlands submitted its first application for payments in May, which was positively assessed in July. It is behind other countries in receiving its share due to delays caused by its national election. All of the funding is intended to be disbursed and the targets achieved by August 2026.
