EU offers €65m for research on quantum chips

Contribution is expected to be matched by countries participating in Chips Joint Undertaking

The EU has opened a call offering €65 million to support research and innovation on semiconductors that make use of quantum technologies.

The funding is being offered through the EU’s Chips Joint Undertaking, with the money set to be matched by a contribution from the funding partnership’s participating countries.

According to the European Commission, a “second quantum revolution is underway” in which researchers can manipulate individual particles of matter and their interactions, building new technologies from the phenomena that emerge.

This is building on a first quantum revolution during the early 20th century that led to the development of technologies including lasers and transistors, which were then used in computing, telecommunications and satellites.

The funding is part of a €200m investment the bloc expects to make in quantum chips over the next three years, the Commission said on 24 September.

“The call will select projects for the development and manufacturing of quantum technologies to enhance innovation in Europe and pave the way for establishing a manufacturing supply chain for quantum chips in Europe,” it said.

“Real-world applications include solving complex optimisation problems in logistics and supply chain management, accelerating drug discovery through molecular simulations, enhancing cybersecurity with advanced encryption methods and improving artificial intelligence and machine-learning algorithms.”

The closing date for the call is 21 January 2025.
