Executives of Liberal, Conservative Parties Respond to Nomination Loophole Concerns at Inquiry

Liberal and Tory top party executives testified at the Foreign Interference Commission on Sept. 20, saying that current rules and procedures in their parties protect against meddling by foreign actors.
The Conservative Party allows citizens and permanent residents aged 14 and older to purchase a membership. Meanwhile the Liberal Party allows anyone who ordinarily resides in Canada, including non-citizens and non-permanent residents, to become a party member, free of charge.
Liberal Party National Director Azam Ishmael and Conservative Party Executive Director Mike Crase defended their organization’s respective practices while presented with intelligence products raising concerns.
The executives were asked to comment on a February 2024 threat assessment on foreign interference from the government-mandated Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections (SITE) Task Force, a “Top Secret” document entered as evidence at the commission in a redacted format….
