Dozens of residents gathered at the Veterans Memorial Park in Otisville on Nov. 11 to pay tribute to veterans who served the country in both peace and war.
Mike Phillips, commander of Mount Hope Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5497, recalled the history and purpose of Veterans Day at the annual service.
“106 years ago, in 1918, in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, World War I ended by the signing of an agreement called an armistice,” Phillips said.
The following year, President Woodrow Wilson declared Nov. 11 Armistice Day to honor soldiers who died in World War I and to show gratitude for peace. The holiday was renamed Veterans Day in the 1950s to honor all those who have served in the military….
