The Queen Amalia’s Tower Estate, a visionary project initiated by Queen Amalia, showcases Greece’s rich agricultural heritage. Our recent tour, guided by an eloquent and friendly guide, began with a warm welcome in the estate’s beautifully preserved surroundings. Established in the mid-19th century, the estate was designed as a model agricultural facility to modernize Greek agronomy.
The original vineyard, one of the estate’s first plantations, was developed with expertise from Megara viticulturists. Today, the vineyard spans 4 hectares and is cultivated organically alongside other crops like pistachio and olive trees. Our guide shared insights into historical references and sustainable practices implemented at the estate.
As we strolled through the estate, we learned about the diverse grape varieties grown, including Greek and European. The goal is to produce high-quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the region. The estate also features a small husbandry model with domestic animals, echoing Queen Amalia’s original vision.
This immersive experience not only highlighted the estate’s historical significance but also its ongoing commitment to sustainable agriculture and quality wine production. The tour concluded with a wine tasting of their exquisite wines, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for this hidden gem in Athens.
