Almost 80 years after debuting, A Streetcar Named Desire remains top draw for actors and audiences

Blanche DuBois, the tragic heroine of Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize drama A Streetcar Named Desire, is a much sought-after and much-prized role. Jessica Tandy originated the role on Broadway in 1947, winning a Tony Award for her performance, and Vivien Leigh won the Oscar for the 1951 film version.
