What We Can Learn From St. Thomas Aquinas on Free Speech

All Canadians should be rejoicing that the federal Liberal government’s Online Harms Act is dead. But this is no time for complacency. If Canadians wish to ensure the preservation of individual liberty and free speech, we must get back to first principles—and the medieval wisdom of St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Online Harms Act died when Parliament was prorogued late last year. It would have broadened the definition of hate crimes, empowered the state to impose house arrest for future hate crimes, established a Digital Safety Commissioner to enforce social media regulations, and raised the maximum penalty for any offence found to be motivated by hate to life imprisonment….
