Court’s Tariff Ruling Will Not Impact Ongoing Trade Negotiations: White House Economist

A federal court ruling blocking President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs will not impact ongoing trade negotiations and agreements, according to National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett.
In an interview with Fox Business Network on May 29, the White House economist shrugged off the court ruling by what he called “activist judges.” The court held that Trump overstepped his authority when he announced the reciprocal tariffs on April 2.
The three-judge panel concluded that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which Trump used to implement his sweeping tariff agenda, does not allow a president to slap universal levies on imports.
“The Worldwide and Retaliatory Tariff Orders exceed any authority granted to the President by IEEPA to regulate importation by means of tariffs,” the judges wrote….
