Gardening: Getting the best out of cool season crops in a changing climate

The fickleness of spring is nothing new to chinook gardeners. Spring conditions have always fluctuated wildly from year to year, but if we look at the historical record, the current trend is toward warmer and drier weather. This was confirmed in a 2021 Ryerson University Data Hub study. Research predicts an increase in frost-free and above 30°C days, as well as a decrease in annual precipitation amounts. While having more frost-free days and a longer growing season may seem like a plus for gardeners, the changes in our spring and summer growing conditions are making it more challenging to grow crops that prefer cooler temperatures.
