Fewer people in America are smoking cigarettes as vaping has become more popular among adults, according to a national survey.
Some 37.8 million people aged 12 and older reported smoking cigarettes in 2024, compared with 43.6 million in 2021, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which was released on July 28.
That was a decline from 16 percent of the population to 13.1 percent.
Cigarette smoking declined among adults aged 18 to 25 and 26 and older, but remained the same among youth aged 12 to 17, according to the national survey, part of the Department of Health and Human Services.
