Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall near Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, early Sunday morning and is forecast to bring heavy rains as it moves inland across northeastern South Carolina.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said it issued tropical storm warnings for portions of North and South Carolina.
Chantal was roughly 70 miles east of Charleston, South Carolina, early July 6, and 85 miles southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina. With maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, the storm was moving northeast at 8 mph.
The storm’s rain bands were moving onshore, with flash floods being an increasing risk, the hurricane center said.
In its 8 a.m. EDT update, the National Hurricane Center said a tropical storm warning remains in effect for areas from South Santee River, South Carolina, to Surf City, North Carolina, with tropical storm conditions to be expected within the warning area….
