Zohran Mamdani Officially Becomes NYC Mayoral Election’s Democratic Nominee

WASHINGTON—New York state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat, has officially become the Democratic Party’s nominee for mayor of the City of New York in the 2025 general election, following the publication of the final results of ranked-choice voting on July 1.
Mamdani is a 33-year-old immigrant from Uganda of Indian descent, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018 and was elected to the New York state Assembly in 2020. After announcing his candidacy in the mayoral Democratic primary contest for the 2025 election, he dramatically rose in the polls from just 1 percent support to rival the frontrunner, fomer New York Gov.
