The percentage of Americans who drink alcoholic beverages has fallen to the lowest level ever recorded, according to a new survey released on Aug. 13.
In the Gallup survey, 54 percent of adult respondents said they drink alcohol. That’s down from 58 percent in 2024, 62 percent in 2023, and 67 percent in 2022.
It’s also 1 percent lower than the previous low, recorded in 1958.
Gallup has been surveying Americans on alcohol consumption since 1939.
Since 2023, the drop in consumption has been more pronounced among women—an 11 percent drop to 51 percent—than men, down 5 percent to 57 percent.
Younger people are more likely to report not drinking alcohol. Just half of adults ages 18 to 34 reported drinking in the latest survey, compared to 56 percent for adults ages 35 to 54 and 56 percent of adults 55 years of age and up.
