Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Aug. 14 that the state would open a second deportation facility, “Deportation Depot,” to further increase Florida’s ability to assist the Trump Administration’s push to detain, process, and deport illegal immigrants.
The facility, he said, would be slightly smaller than the state’s recently opened facility, Alligator Alcatraz.
Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson, Florida, an unincorporated community in Baker County off I-10, less than an hour’s drive west of Jacksonville, was selected to host the new facility. Like Alligator Alcatraz, it will be developed by the Florida Division of Emergency Management with later reimbursements from the Department of Homeland Security, and it will be a place from which detained illegal immigrants will be put on deportation flights, DeSantis said….
