Nearly half of the kiosks set up by the IRS to enable taxpayers to file tax returns and complete other services were inoperable or had an unknown status, a watchdog said in a new report.
Of the 100 kiosks located across 37 taxpayer assistance centers, 40 were not operable, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in the report released on Aug. 8.
When the kiosks were not working, center managers submitted service requests to a contractor. Twenty-four tickets were open at the time of the inspector general’s evaluation. The time needed to close tickets ranged from 30 days or less to 463 days.
The watchdog had previously identified inoperable kiosks as part of a larger audit and alerted the IRS. Officials with the tax agency indicated at the time that they planned to work with the contractor to fix the kiosks by the end of 2024….
