A federal judge has ruled against the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze Harvard University’s funding, holding that the government violated the First Amendment in its attempt to combat anti-Semitism.
In a ruling on Sept. 3, U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs said the administration was right to combat anti-Semitism and that Harvard had wrongfully tolerated hateful behavior.
“The record here, however, does not reflect that fighting antisemitism was [the administration’s] true aim in acting against Harvard and, even if it were, combatting antisemitism cannot be accomplished on the back of the First Amendment,” she said.
Her decision removes the administration’s orders freezing vast amounts of money flowing to Harvard and prohibits it from issuing additional funding freezes….
