Numerous gunshots were heard at a B.C. ostrich farm early in the morning of Nov. 7, hours after the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said it would be moving forward will plans to cull the herd following a Supreme Court decision to dismiss the appeal of the farm owners.
The agency announced it would be moving forward with the cull shortly after the court decision was handed down on Nov. 7. The farm is located in Edgewood, B.C., about 150 kilometres east of Kelowna.
A holding pen at the farm that was filled with ostriches on Nov. 6, appeared still, and empty of live birds on Nov. 7. The CFIA did not say when the cull would be carried out but workers had begun to set up equipment and flood lights around a large hay-bale enclosure near the back of the ostrich pen after the court decision was released….
