Alberta to Increase Speed Limit to 120 Kilometres per Hour on Some Highways in ‘Mini-Trial’

The Alberta government said it will be testing higher speed limits on selected highways in the new year in a “mini-trial” that could see further changes in the province.
The decision follows a five-week online survey where the government asked residents to share comments about increasing the speed limit on some highways by 10 kilometres per hour.
Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Devin Dreeshen said a majority of the feedback was in favour of the increase. He said the province would be temporarily changing the speed limit on some rural divided highways in 2026, something the province calls a “mini-trial.”
“Alberta’s divided highways were engineered to safely handle 120 kilometres per hour, and advances in vehicle safety and road design make that even more practical today,” Dreeshen said in a Dec. 16 news release….
