Travellers at some Canadian airports may have an easier time getting through pre-boarding screening this holiday season, as new technology allows items like liquids and electronics to remain in carry-on baggage during security checks.
Crown corporation Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) says its rollout of 43 new computed tomography (CT) x-ray scanners means that passengers will no longer need to remove large electronics like laptops or approved liquids, aerosols, and gels from luggage at some airport security checkpoints.
Airports that have already installed the CT x-ray machines include those in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Halifax.
CATSA says the technology is capable of 3D imaging, which offers security staff a better image—enhancing screening capability for items like explosives. The previous screening technology only allowed for 2D images….
