Don’t Prioritize Commercial Interests Over Human Rights, Coalition Urges Carney Ahead of China Visit

A coalition of nine human rights organizations is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney to take “strong and effective action” to address the Chinese regime’s widespread human rights violations, including through its engagement in transnational repression in Canada.
The Canadian Coalition on Human Rights in China wrote a letter to Carney on Jan. 9, ahead of the first official visit to China by a Canadian prime minister since 2017, urging him to use the trip as an opportunity to “signal a clear intention to put human rights at the centre of Canada’s relationship with China.”
Carney will visit to China from Jan. 13 to Jan. 17, where he will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and business leaders, according to the Prime Minister’s Office. Discussions are expected to revolve around trade, energy, agriculture, and international security….
