Property and Violent Crime Rates Now Higher in Canada Than US

Property and violent crime rates in Canada have now surpassed that of the United States, according to a new report.
The Fraser Institute pre-released a paper this week with details from its upcoming report comparing crime rates in Canada and the United States.
The paper notes that between 2014 and 2022, Canada’s violent crime rate increased by 44 percent, to 434.11 violent crimes per 100,000 people. During the same time period, the violent crime rate in the U.S. increased by just 5 percent, to 380.7 violent crimes per 100,000 people.
When it comes to property crime, Canada had 2,491 crimes per 100,000 people in 2022, marking a 7 percent increase over 2014. Canada’s rate of property crime is 27.5 percent higher than that of the United States, which saw a 24 percent drop in its property crime rate between 2014 and 2022.
