Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says Canada’s role in supplying raw materials essential to the U.S. economy explains the trade deficit President-elect Donald Trump has labeled a subsidy to his country’s northern neighbour.
Smith made the remarks in a Dec. 18 social media post in response to Trump’s comments on Truth Social that same day, in which he questioned the U.S. trade deficit with Canada, comparing it to financial support for the United States’ northern neighbour and citing it as a reason for the country to become the 51st U.S. state.
