The Texas Senate approved a bill on Wednesday granting parents in the state access to taxpayer funds for covering expenses related to the private education of their children.
Senate Bill 2, known as “The Texas Education Freedom Act,” authored by state Sen. Brandon Creighton, proposes using $1 billion to create approximately 100,000 education savings accounts that parents can use to pay for their children’s nonpublic education expenses, the Senate said in a Feb. 5 update.
Funds can only be used for education-related expenses, such as private school tuition, textbooks, uniforms, and fees for private tutors.
