Judge Temporarily Halts NYC Mayor’s Effort to Allow ICE on Rikers Island

NEW YORK CITY—The New York Supreme Court has issued an order temporarily halting cooperation between city and federal agencies on Rikers Island. The New York City Council had sued to block an executive order signed by the city’s deputy mayor that allowed for federal agencies to set up offices on Rikers Island.
Judge Mary Rosado ordered on April 21 that city officials were prohibited from “taking any steps toward negotiating, signing, or implementing any Memorandum of Understanding with the federal government regarding federal law enforcement presence on Department of Correction property.”
