US Sets New Energy Production Record in 2024, Driven by Growth in Natural Gas, Renewables

The United States produced more energy in 2024 than in any year on record, according to newly released data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Total domestic energy output topped 103 quadrillion British thermal units (BTUs), a 1 percent increase from the previous record set in 2023, the May 2025 report noted.
Natural gas remained the country’s top energy source, accounting for 38 percent of total production. U.S. dry natural gas output reached nearly 38 trillion cubic feet—roughly level with the prior year.
Crude oil also hit a new high, with average production at 13.2 million barrels per day. That marked a 2 percent increase over 2023, driven largely by expansion in the Permian Basin, which spans parts of Texas and New Mexico.
