Poilievre’s Chance at House Return Will Come August 18 as Carney Calls Byelection

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called a byelection in the Alberta riding of Battle River-Crowfoot, which Tory Leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to run in.
Carney’s office, in a statement issued on June 30, said the byelection will take place on Monday, August 18.
According to electoral law, an election campaign must be at least 37 days and no longer than 51 days. The byelection campaign in Battle River-Crowfoot will last nearly the maximum length. This will not impact when Poilievre could potentially return to the House of Commons, given MPs are currently on break for the summer and will reconvene on Sept. 15.
The byelection can be held after Tory MP Damien Kurek formally resigned his Battle River-Crowfoot seat on June 17. Shortly after the April 28 election, Kurek had announced he would step down to allow Poilievre to return to the Commons….
