Journalist Travis Dhanraj publicly resigned from CBC this week, but his lawyer Kathryn Marshall says Canada’s public broadcaster is “refusing” to accept his resignation.
Dhanraj resigned publicly on July 7, sending a letter of resignation to executives and an email explaining his decision to colleagues.
Dhanraj said his decision to leave CBC was driven by an environment that he described as being “defined by retaliation, exclusion, and psychological harm,” adding that “when I pushed for honest conversations about systemic issues and editorial imbalance I was shut out.”
CBC, however, has said Dhanraj remains one of its employees, Marshall said.
“The CBC wants to maintain control over him, that’s really the true reason they’re not accepting his resignation,” Marshall said in a July 9 interview with Candice Malcolm of Juno News. She noted that Dhanraj can’t sue CBC civilly because he is part of their union. Instead, he plans to pursue legal action in human rights court….
