Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised his government will open its new major projects office by Sept. 1.
The announcement came while Carney met with Canada’s premiers July 22 in Huntsville, Ont., to discuss ways to boost the Canadian economy amid trade uncertainty with the United States.
The major projects office will be a hub for projects considered under the recently passed One Canadian Economy Act, and aims for a two-year timeline for making approval decisions on nation building projects, Carney said. He said his government is focused on moving from “why build?” to “how to build?”
Five criteria to guide such projects were outlined by Carney and the premiers during a meeting that took place in Saskatoon last month. These criteria include the potential to boost Canada’s economy, independence, and security, the likelihood of success, the prioritization by indigenous leaders, and the potential for clean growth….
