Ontario Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for ‘Merciless’ Attack on 5-Year-Old in Revenge Against Ex-girlfriend

An Ontario man has been sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of a 5-year-old child, in what the province’s Superior Court of Justice described as a “merciless” act of revenge against his former girlfriend seven years ago.
Dyon Smart, 35, who was found guilty in 2022 of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and breaching bail conditions, has been sentenced to life in prison for the violent attack on the son of his ex-partner on July 19, 2018, Justice James Stribopoulos said in a Sept. 24 court document detailing his reasons for judgement.
Following heated arguments with the child’s mother the night before, Smart allegedly lured the boy into a wooded area on the morning of July 19, near his ex-girlfriend’s townhouse where he was temporarily staying. In the isolated area, he “brutally” assaulted the child by repeatedly stomping on his face, head, and torso, and later attempted to asphyxiate him using a rope-like cloth, according to the court document….
