Middletown Organizes Emergency SNAP Benefits Relief

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y.—City of Middletown mayor Joseph DeStefano announced on Oct. 27 that the city will be reallocating $10,000 in already received federal funds to provide emergency relief for families receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The federal shutdown has continued through much of October, and unless Congress reaches an agreement before the beginning of November, SNAP benefits will lose their funding at that time.
SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, provides food purchasing assistance to low-income families and individuals.
DeStefano said in the statement: “With the upcoming cutoff of benefits for many of our residents, we must act quickly, responsibly, and compassionately. These funds are already in our possession—and the most responsible use of them is to direct them to the people who need help right now.”…
