CFIA Ramps Up Inspections to Prevent Repeat of 2024 Listeria Deaths

Canada’s food safety regulator is launching a large-scale inspection initiative of more than 2,400 licensed food production facilities that have yet to be inspected in response to a government review prompted by last year’s deadly listeria outbreak in plant-based milk.
The inspection campaign is to be completed by the fall of 2026 and the results will be used by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to determine “future inspection frequencies for the manufactured-food sector,” the plan documents say.
“These measures will enable the CFIA to improve risk-management decisions, prevent unsafe foods from reaching the marketplace, and ensure that businesses are held accountable for meeting their responsibilities,” CFIA President Paul MacKinnon said in a statement….
