More than 40 senators are calling on the federal government to impose a ban on sports betting advertisements in Canada.
A letter addressed to the Prime Minister Mark Carney from Charlottetown Sen. Percy Downe and Waterloo, Ont. Sen. Marty Deacon asks Ottawa to instruct the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to prohibit all advertisements for sports gambling applications and websites.
Downe shared a link to the letter on social media, noting that cigarette advertising is prohibited due to its detrimental effects on public health, and emphasized that this same principle should extend to gambling.
“The more immediate problem…is the very real harm being done today to vulnerable people of all ages exposed to a constant stream of advertisements promising a ‘premium gaming experience’ and urging them to turn their phone into a pocket-sized casino,” the petition letter says….
