New York City Council Speaker Condemns Judge’s Order to Deport Staffer

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin on March 18 condemned a decision by an immigration judge to deport a staffer to Venezuela.
She said in a statement that the council was “outraged” that Judge Charles Conroy ordered the removal of Rafael Rubio, the council employee, on March 18 after he was arrested more than two months ago during a routine immigration check.
Following his arrest, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a Jan. 13 statement that Rubio was an illegal immigrant with a criminal history that “includes an arrest for assault in New York.”
DHS said Rubio had entered the United States on a B-2 tourist visa in 2017, which required him to leave by Oct. 22, 2017, and added that he had “no legal right to be in the United States.”…
