
Four students from Chania, Crete, have captured international attention with their innovative project, Calmify AI, a device designed to detect student stress through artificial intelligence. Their invention earned recognition in a Pan-European competition and sparked important discussions about the role of technology in mental health and education.
Unlike many modern AI tools that rely on smartphones or cloud-based applications, the students chose to create a standalone device. Their goal was to develop a practical and user-friendly system that could operate independently without constant internet access. One of their greatest technical challenges was fitting AI computational power into such a small device while keeping it efficient and energy-saving.
The team also placed strong emphasis on privacy and ethics. They explained that the device analyzes facial expressions locally, directly on the device, rather than sending data to external servers. Images are neither stored nor shared, ensuring that users’ personal information remains protected. According to GreekAffair, the students believe that the technology focuses solely on identifying signs of stress or fatigue to provide support.
Beyond the technical aspects, the young inventors expressed thoughtful concerns about the future of AI. While they believe artificial intelligence can become a valuable ally, they also warned against excessive dependence on technology. They stressed that AI should support human beings rather than replace human judgment, emotions, or relationships.
The students also addressed stereotypes in the technology field, which is often considered male-dominated. Their success demonstrates that innovation is not defined by gender but by creativity, determination and knowledge.
