On Europe Day, we are reminded that Europe is far more than a political or economic
union. It is a shared cultural and historical journey shaped by ideas, values, and the
enduring pursuit of human dignity.
From ancient Greek philosophy and the spiritual legacy of Byzantium to the
Renaissance and the Enlightenment, Europe’s identity has been built upon dialogue,
knowledge, creativity, and democracy. These foundations remain profoundly relevant
today, in a world increasingly challenged by division, uncertainty, and the rapid
transformation of societies.
Europe Day is therefore not only a celebration of unity, but also a call for reflection.
What kind of Europe do we wish to shape for future generations? A Europe guided
solely by institutions and markets, or a Europe inspired by culture, humanity, and
shared values?
I believe that Europe’s greatest strength lies in its cultural depth and its ability to
defend freedom, pluralism, and human-centered progress. In times when public
discourse is often dominated by noise and polarization, the role of media, education,
and cultural dialogue becomes more essential than ever.
As Founder of European Horizons Media Group, I strongly believe that journalism
must do more than simply report events. It should encourage critical thought, preserve
historical memory, and promote meaningful dialogue across societies and cultures.
Europe is not only a geographic or political space. It is an idea — one that continues
to evolve through every generation that chooses cooperation over division, culture
over intolerance, and dialogue over conflict.
On this Europe Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to the values that unite us and
continue building a Europe rooted in culture, democracy, and humanity.
With appreciation,
Dr Mary Marouli-Zilemenou
