Ottawa Moves to Fast-Track Three ‘National Interest’ Projects

The Liberal government said on June 24 it has identified three major projects deemed to be in the national interest that it wants to designate under the Building Canada Act.
The designation would allow the streamlining of regulatory approvals and the circumvention of some federal laws to speed up development.
The three projects are the Mackenzie Valley Highway Project, the Grays Bay Road and Port Project, and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s Deep Geological Repository.
Before a national interest designation, the Building Canada Act requires Ottawa to launch consultations with provincial and territorial governments and indigenous peoples who could be adversely affected….
