Brazen Toronto Festival Shootout Sparks Calls From Public Figures for Stronger Deterrence Measures

After the July 11 shooting at Toronto’s Salsa on St. Clair festival left two men dead and five injured, Deputy Mayor Mike Colle interrupted a police press conference to demand that “thugs” who carry out such shootings be handed longer sentences without bail.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw also called on the federal government to change the law so that public shootings are easier to prosecute as first-degree murder, regardless of motive. Such incidents, he said, should be treated with “the utmost seriousness.”
