Deportation protections for hundreds of thousands of Haitians and Syrians living in the United States are expiring on July 27.
This follows a Supreme Court ruling last month that said the Trump administration can end temporary protected status (TPS) designations for the two countries that had remained in place, cumulatively, for decades.
Haiti’s TPS designation came after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the island in January 2010.
Syria received its protected status in March 2012 in response to the country’s bloody civil war.
Both countries were initially designated to be under TPS for 18 months.
“It has been more than 16 years since Haiti was originally designated for TPS in January 2010,” the White House’s Rapid Response account on X said. “The ‘T’ in ‘TPS’ stands for ‘TEMPORARY.’”…
