Another House Democrat Loses to a Democratic Socialist Challenger in Michigan

Democratic Socialist Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney defeated U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) in the Democratic primary for the state’s 13th Congressional District, ending the second-term congressman’s bid for renomination in a Detroit-based seat that Democrats have held for decades.
Thanedar is among several incumbent Democrats who have lost to Democratic Socialist-backed candidates during primaries for November’s midterms, including candidates in New York and Colorado earlier this cycle.
The Associated Press called the race at 8:55 a.m. on Aug. 5. McKinney had received 57,714 votes, or 51.9 percent, to Thanedar’s 53,494, or 48.1 percent, as of that time with 99 percent of votes counted. …
