Unlicensed Tour-Boat Pilot Charged in 2 Deaths Found to Be an Illegal Immigrant

Immigration authorities have detained the pilot of a speedboat that capsized in New York Harbor, killing a 5-month-old infant and her mother, after confirming he was in the United States illegally.  
Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana, 46, of Manville, New Jersey, faces federal charges linked to the Aug. 8 incident near the Statue of Liberty. Department of Homeland Security officials said he lied to a border officer and claimed U.S. citizenship when he crossed into Texas from Mexico in 2007.
Agents took him into custody after his release on bail in the criminal case, in which he is charged with causing the deaths of Antonella Garcia, 5 months old, and Sara Sanchez, 27, due to misconduct or neglect.  …
