The World Health Organization (WHO) on Aug. 11 defended its immunization guidelines after President Donald Trump issued an order to change the childhood vaccination schedule to space out the shots.
On Aug. 10, Trump signed an order to recommend administering the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine in three shots during separate visits. The combined MMR shot is commonly given to children, and some states mandate the vaccine for attendance at day care, schools, and summer camps.
Tarik Jasarevic, a spokesperson for the United Nations’ health body, referred to the Trump administration’s changes during a press briefing on Tuesday, saying that WHO’s vaccine recommendations are “based on years of research across the world on how the immune system develops, when a person is most susceptible for a disease and how to keep protection strong.”…
