While the energy industry remains Alberta’s main economic growth driver, recent job gains that have given the province the strongest employment growth in Canada have largely come from industries outside oil and gas.
A new RBC report shows Alberta added roughly 79,000 jobs in June compared with the same month a year earlier—a three percent increase that outpaced every province except Prince Edward Island. About three-quarters of those jobs (58,500) were full-time, with most created in the private sector.
Job growth remained relatively unchanged in most provinces, but declined in Quebec and British Columbia. Ontario was the only other province with notable growth, adding 65,000 jobs, although the report noted its 0.8 percent increase “was a fraction of Alberta’s.”…
