A fundraising campaign launched to support a Belleville police officer injured while protecting the town’s synagogue from a gunman is seeking to raise $1 million, after the initial goal of $18,000 was surpassed.
Members of Canada’s Jewish community set up the GoFundMe to support Const. Jeff Smith, and have raised $840,000 as of Sept. 28. According to fundraiser organizer Derek Kreindler, more than 7,000 people have donated to the campaign.
“What began as an immediate expression of gratitude has become a national demonstration of what Canadians believe: when someone risks his life protecting others, the people he protected will remember him and stand behind his family,” Kreindler wrote….
