Was Quebec’s PQ Victory a Vote for Separation or Change?

The Parti Québécois has returned to power in Quebec for the first time in more than a decade. While the party didn’t get a majority mandate and the incumbent CAQ was shut out of the legislature, which could point to a desire for change rather than an endorsement of separation, voters still gave the most votes to the separatists over the federalist alternatives.
There are a number of factors behind this, including the state of the opposition, the PQ’s campaign, and regional voting patterns in Quebec.
