A Toronto police officer was shot in the leg early Thursday morning while attempting to arrest a suspect during an investigation into a stolen e-bike, according to police.
Fellow officers on scene applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and rushed the injured officer to hospital, where he is listed in serious but non-life-threatening condition.
Accused faces over a dozen charges
The accused, a 27-year-old man from Peterborough, has been charged with more than a dozen offences, including attempted murder. At the time of the shooting, he was out on release conditions related to prior weapons offences and was wanted on outstanding warrants in both Peel Region and Waterloo Region.
A second suspect connected to the incident remains outstanding, and police continue to search for him.
Chief calls bail failures “deeply troubling”
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw addressed the incident, calling it “deeply troubling” that the accused was out on bail despite having outstanding warrants at the time of the shooting. Demkiw renewed calls for stronger accountability measures for repeat violent offenders, pointing to gaps in the justice system that allow individuals with active warrants to remain free.
A difficult year for officer safety
The shooting adds to a troubling trend this year, with more than 600 Toronto police officers injured in the line of duty in 2026 alone.
The Toronto Police Service extends its wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the injured officer.
