A Russian national living in Miami was sentenced on Sept. 16 to six years in prison and three years of supervised release for an identity theft fraud scheme that investigators at first thought might have been an elaborate espionage plot.
Dmitry Shushlebin, of Miami, was also ordered to pay $458,839.69 in restitution for running a “synthetic person” fraud operation.
According to court records from the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Shushlebin raked in at least $630,067 by defrauding banks and credit card companies.
On July 24, 2025, Shushlebin was charged with conspiracy to give false information in registering to vote and submit fraudulent voter registrations, wire fraud, making false statements, and aggravated identity theft. …
