Early voting for the November midterm elections kicked off in Virginia on Sept. 18 as voters decide which party controls Congress and key state-level offices.
Voters in some other states, including South Dakota, Minnesota, and Idaho, can cast absentee ballots in person, usually at a local election office or voting center. More expansive early voting will begin in those and other states in the coming weeks.
Twenty-seven states offer voting on Saturday. One of those states is Nevada, where there is a competitive gubernatorial primary between incumbent Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo and Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford.
In the spotlight ahead of the midterms was President Donald Trump’s executive order to tighten regulations on mail-in voting. It would have given federal agencies a greater role in verifying who should get a mail-in ballot and how those ballots are processed by the postal service. The Supreme Court upheld an injunction from a federal judge blocking a postal service rule in the administration of mail-in ballots.
