The fight for control of state legislatures and governors’ mansions is heating up in the final weeks of the 2026 midterm cycle, as both parties seek to retain—or flip—executive and legislative seats that will shape state and federal politics for years to come.
The top prize in state-level politics is a trifecta, or control of the governorship and the state legislature, including a lower chamber and a state Senate.
Currently, Democrats hold 16 trifectas to Republicans’ 23, while 11 states have a divided government.
